MISSION – Thanks to savings from previous transportation projects, $42 million from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund will go towards 21 projects across B.C., including one that will ensure Mission commuters enjoy a smoother and safer drive along Highway 7.
"The Government of Canada is committed to strengthening our economy and creating jobs. Resurfacing the Lougheed Highway creates employment while improving the safety of Canadians, so I'm pleased that we can partner with British Columbia on this project," says Randy Kamp, MP for Pitt Meadows--Maple Ridge--Mission.
“This proves that we use your tax dollars effectively,” says Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton. “With these savings we get not only highway improvements, but jobs too.”
“Road safety is a priority for this government,” says Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes. “With these improvements commuters will enjoy safer driving conditions along our highways.”
The funding for these 21 projects is available as the result of savings achieved through competitive bids on previously announced provincial Infrastructure Stimulus Fund highway projects. It is estimated these new projects will create more than 270 direct jobs. Of the $42 million invested, $38 million is eligible under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund – split equally between Canada and B.C.
The BC government is contributing $275K and the federal government is contributing $225K toward the total cost of $500K to resurface the stretch of Highway 7 between Chester Road and Nelson Road. The project is scheduled to be completed March 31, 2011.
The federal contribution to these projects comes from the $4 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which provides funding to provincial, territorial and municipal construction-ready infrastructure projects. Since March 2009, over 400 projects have received a total federal investment of over $500 million under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund across British Columbia.
Since October 2008, over $5.3 billion has been committed for accelerated capital projects across British Columbia, which is estimated to generate more than 34,000 construction jobs over the life of the projects.
