HATZIC PRAIRIE WATER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS FUNDED
March 21, 2009

MISSION – of the Fraser Valley Regional District will benefit from a joint federal-provincial investment of $985,600 to connect additional residents to the Hatzic Prairie water system. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthen the British Columbia economy by reducing red tape, creating jobs and getting shovels in the ground sooner.

“By working with local governments we are aiming to bring residents in B.C. the best in local services,” said Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission MP Randy Kamp. “We are committed to helping communities like Hatzic Prairie build for the future, and the Building Canada partnership is a great way to achieve this goal.”

“Having safe, clean drinking water when you turn on the tap is taken for granted by most of us,” said Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Randy Hawes. “Thanks to the great partnership between federal, provincial and local government, Hatzic Prairie residents will soon be off the boil order and secure in the safety of their drinking water.”

This Building Canada-funded project will make possible the installation of a water supply main and reservoir, resolving long-standing potable water issues. Residents living in the project area will be able to tie in to the recently-improved Hatzic Prairie Water System. It is estimated that the investment will result in 14 jobs.

“This grant ensures that people on boil order water supplies will now have a safe and secure source of water,” says Richard Bogstie, Fraser Valley Regional District director for the area. “It will provide a high level of protection for homes in the grant area. I would like to thank MP Randy Kamp and MLA Hawes for their diligent work to secure this grant on behalf of the people in Hatzic Prairie.”

This project is one of 41 projects across the province that will break ground quickly thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of $110 million. Together with local government contributions, the total investment in local infrastructure improvements in British Columbia during this first intake exceeds $175 million. The governments of Canada and British Columbia have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and to flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in British Columbia communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
