BILL C-428

Dear Constituent,

Many of my constituents have inquired about Bill C-428. I appreciate you taking the time to learn more about it.

As you may know, this bill was introduced in the House of Commons by Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla and it was co-sponsored by NDP Premier-turned Liberal MP, Bob Rae.   If passed, the bill would allow people to receive old age security and guaranteed income supplement benefits after being in the country for only three years, instead of 10 years, as it is currently.

Let me be very clear. Our Conservative government does not support this bill.

Our old age security system is designed to strike a proper balance between the contributions that individuals make to our economy and our society and the publicly paid for benefits that they receive in their golden years.

According to the Minister of Human Resources, if Bill C-428 were to pass it would cost taxpayers  an additional $700 million!  Like most Liberal/NDP proposals, it is financially irresponsible.   Should this bill ever be voted on in Parliament, rest assured that I will be voting against it.

Sincerely,
