Conservatives Strengthen Canada's Democracy July 2008

Dear Constituent,

Now that it's summer, democratic reform is probably the last thing on most people's minds. But it's still a good time to review our Conservative government's ambitious plan for democratic reform.

This month I just wanted to give you an update about what our Conservative government's been doing to make Canada more democratic.

For example, we're fixing the Democratic Deficit by reforming the Senate, fixing election dates, and making the House of Commons more responsive to changes in population.

If you're interested in learning more about what our Conservative government's been doing, more information is available for you here.

I wish you and your family all the best for a safe and fun summer season.

Best regards,

- Randy

Making the Senate Democratic and Accountable:
Our Conservative government is working to create an accountable Senate consistent with the values, principles and traditions of democracy. The Senate will be accountable for the decisions it makes, the work it does, and the money it spends. Accountability and democracy will finally come to the Senate.

Fixed Election Dates - Delivered:
Just over a year ago, our government's Fixed Election Dates bill became law. This will help Canadians hold the government more accountable by holding elections at predicted times, not when it best suits the governing party.

Restoring Representation by Population:
Last autumn our government introduced a bill which will end the current practice of penalizing provinces for having a faster than average population growth by changing the MP allocation formula.
