Staying Connected - December 2010
December 09, 2010

Dear Constituents,

One of the most important ways in which our Conservative government is reforming Justice in Canada is by shifting the focus to protecting victims of crime. Too often past governments have forgotten that victims need consideration when changing criminal laws.

To this end, we're helping to bring peace of mind to the families of murder victims. Currently any murderer is eligible to apply for early parole after just 15 years - no matter how long their sentence is.

This isn't fair to the families of murder victims, who have to suffer the anguish of attending early parole eligibility hearings after losing a loved one.

And that's why we're working towards repealing this clause that allows a murderer to repeatedly apply for parole, only fifteen years into his or her sentence. As always, I've included more information on this measure below if you're interested. Please feel free to get in touch with me with your questions or concerns at any time.

Regards,

Randy

Protecting Victims' Families Demands Nothing Less
New Bill to ensure serious time is served for the taking of a life:
We're taking action to make sure that murderers will know they aren't going to get off easy. Ending "faint-hope" reviews will put a stop to early parole and the old wounds that these hearings reopen for grieving families.

Ensuring longer sentences for serial killers:
Stephen Harper and our government knows that it's also important that families of murder victims see that the value of each life taken be acknowledged in the sentencing process. That's why we've introduced legislation to make sure that when someone murders more than one person, the periods before parole can be granted are added on top of each other - right now they can be served all at once and some serial killers could be eligible for parole after as little as 10 years.
